(Eye Camp)4

It has been a challenging year for all Nepalese and the events in the country have also cast its impact on our activities. Ananda Sangh’s 23rd Micro-Surgical Cataract Program on April 29 and 30 was cancelled due to the major earthquake on April 25. We were finally able to hold it on October 1 to 3. However, the program this time also met with some obstacles. Due to national shortage in diesel and petrol, mobilisation of surgical patients from some remote areas to the program was not possible.

Of 306 patients selected from the pool of 3,300 screened at 9 remote sites, only 178 were mobilised to the program. But an additional 43 cataract patients were identified among the 244 screened at Pullahari Monastery on October 2. Thus, a total 3,544 patients were screened this time and 221 underwent cataract surgery and phaco lens implant.

To date since 1995, Ananda Sangh has screened 51,674 patients and provided 4,307 with free cataract surgery and intra-ocular lens implant.

Ananda Sangh’s Micro-Surgical Cataract Program supports the work of Dr. Sanduk Ruit and the Tilganga Eye Centre in alleviating treatable blindness in Nepal. The association with Tilgange Eye Centre goes back a long way and is based on the friendship, trust and understanding between the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche (1954-1992) and Dr. Sanduk Ruit. They shared the same vision and commitment to the welfare of the under-privileged, poor and needy and the same ideal to mitigating cataract blindness among them.

The Jamgon Kongtrul Eye Centre in Kalimpong (West Bengal, India) set up in 2005 evolved from the many years of association. The community eye centre is benefitting patients in Darjeeling District and Sikkhim.
